What changes when you convert VOB to M4A

    • This extracts the audio and discards the video entirely. The soundtrack inside a VOB file is typically AC-3, and it is re-encoded to AAC-LC on the way out.

    • Expect a much smaller file. Video accounts for most of the bytes, so about 49 MB per minute becomes roughly 1.3 MB per minute of M4A.

    • Subtitles do not survive audio extraction, since an audio container has nowhere to store them.

    • When a video holds several audio tracks, the main one is extracted; alternate language tracks are not merged into the result.

    About VOB to M4A Conversion

Extracting M4A audio from a VOB video pulls the soundtrack out of the DVD-Video (MPEG-2 PS) container and writes it as a standalone MPEG-4 Part 14 file. The video stream, which holds most of the data, is discarded.

Developed by DVD Forum in 1996, VOB carries MPEG-2 video and AC-3, DTS, LPCM, or MP2 audio. That combination sets the upper bound on what any conversion can preserve.

M4A was introduced by Apple / MPEG in 2003. It holds audio in whichever codec it was encoded with (AAC-LC, HE-AAC, or ALAC) and plays natively on web browsers, Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and smart TVs.

After converting your file, you can use Scriptivox transcription services to convert your audio to text. Perfect for meetings, interviews, podcasts, and more.

    VOB to M4A: common questions

Will I lose quality converting VOB to M4A?
Extraction itself does not degrade the audio beyond the re-encode. The ceiling is the soundtrack already stored in the video, so the result can match that track but not exceed it.
What file size should I expect from the M4A result?
Dramatically smaller, since only the soundtrack remains: expect around 1.3 MB per minute.
Is M4A widely supported on phones and browsers?
Support is effectively universal: M4A plays without extra software on web browsers, Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and smart TVs.
Are subtitle tracks kept when converting to M4A?
Nothing but audio survives extraction, so subtitle and video tracks are removed.
Which M4A settings give the best result?
Aim for 96 to 256 kbps. Speech is fine near the bottom of that range; music and anything you plan to edit again belong near the top.
