What changes when you convert M2TS to M4A

    • Only the soundtrack survives: the video stream is dropped, and the AC-3 audio inside the M2TS file is re-encoded as AAC-LC.

    • The size drop is dramatic because the video stream is where nearly all the data lives. A minute of M2TS runs around 206 MB; the extracted M4A is roughly 1.3 MB per minute.

    • Any subtitle tracks in the source are not part of an audio file and are dropped during extraction.

    • The source can carry more than one audio track, for example alternate languages or a commentary. Extraction takes the primary track.

    About M2TS to M4A Conversion

This tool takes the audio track from inside a M2TS file, a BDAV MPEG-2 Transport Stream container from 2006, and saves it on its own as M4A. Everything visual is left behind.

M2TS comes from Blu-ray Disc Association and dates to 2006. It usually holds H.264, MPEG-2, or VC-1 video with AC-3, DTS, or LPCM sound, and those streams set the ceiling for anything converted out of it.

M4A comes from Apple / MPEG and dates to 2003. It carries audio in whichever codec it was encoded with (AAC-LC, HE-AAC, or ALAC), and without installing anything it plays on web browsers, Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and smart TVs.

After converting your file, you can use Scriptivox transcription services to convert your audio to text. Perfect for meetings, interviews, podcasts, and more.

    M2TS to M4A: common questions

Does converting M2TS to M4A reduce audio quality?
The audio can only be as good as the track inside the video. Extracting does not add loss beyond the encoding step itself.
How much bigger or smaller will the M4A file be?
Much smaller. The video stream holds nearly all the data, so removing it typically cuts the file by an order of magnitude, down to about 1.3 MB per minute.
Where can I play M4A files?
Almost anywhere. M4A plays natively on web browsers, Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and smart TVs, so you can share the file without asking anyone to install anything.
What happens to subtitles and extra tracks?
They are dropped. An audio file has nowhere to store subtitles or alternate video tracks, so only the soundtrack remains.
What bitrate should I choose for M4A?
Most material sits comfortably between 96 and 256 kbps. Use the lower end for speech and the upper end for music, or whenever the file may be edited or re-encoded later.
