What changes when you convert OGV to ALAC

    • This extracts the audio and discards the video entirely. The soundtrack inside a OGV file is typically Vorbis, and it is re-encoded to ALAC on the way out.

    • Expect a much smaller file. Video accounts for most of the bytes, so about 26 MB per minute becomes roughly 6 MB per minute of ALAC.

    • Choosing lossless ALAC means nothing further is lost, though it cannot exceed the Vorbis track stored in the source video.

    • Subtitles do not survive audio extraction, since an audio container has nowhere to store them.

    • When a video holds several audio tracks, the main one is extracted; alternate language tracks are not merged into the result.

    About OGV to ALAC Conversion

Extracting ALAC audio from a OGV video pulls the soundtrack out of the Ogg container and writes it as a standalone MPEG-4 (.m4a) file. The video stream, which holds most of the data, is discarded.

Developed by Xiph.Org Foundation in 2008, OGV carries Theora video and Vorbis audio. That combination sets the upper bound on what any conversion can preserve.

ALAC was introduced by Apple in 2004. It holds losslessly compressed audio (ALAC) and plays natively on macOS and iOS.

After converting your file, you can use Scriptivox transcription services to convert your audio to text. Perfect for meetings, interviews, podcasts, and more.

    OGV to ALAC: common questions

Will I lose quality converting OGV to ALAC?
Extraction itself does not degrade the audio beyond the re-encode. The ceiling is the soundtrack already stored in the video, so the result can match that track but not exceed it.
What file size should I expect from the ALAC result?
Dramatically smaller, since only the soundtrack remains: expect around 6 MB per minute.
Is ALAC widely supported on phones and browsers?
Support is good but not universal: ALAC plays natively on macOS and iOS, and other systems need a media player.
Are subtitle tracks kept when converting to ALAC?
Nothing but audio survives extraction, so subtitle and video tracks are removed.
Is this converter free, and what happens to my file?
Yes, it is free. Your file is uploaded to our servers only to make the conversion, it is never published or shared, and the download link expires after one hour.
