What changes when you convert OGV to WAV

    • Only the soundtrack survives: the video stream is dropped, and the Vorbis audio inside the OGV file is re-encoded as PCM.

    • The size drop is dramatic because the video stream is where nearly all the data lives. A minute of OGV runs around 26 MB; the extracted WAV is roughly 21 MB per minute.

    • WAV is lossless, but the ceiling is the soundtrack already inside the video. That track is usually Vorbis, which is lossy, so WAV preserves it exactly rather than improving it.

    • Any subtitle tracks in the source are not part of an audio file and are dropped during extraction.

    • The source can carry more than one audio track, for example alternate languages or a commentary. Extraction takes the primary track.

    About OGV to WAV Conversion

This tool takes the audio track from inside a OGV file, a Ogg container from 2008, and saves it on its own as WAV. Everything visual is left behind.

OGV comes from Xiph.Org Foundation and dates to 2008. It usually holds Theora video with Vorbis sound, and those streams set the ceiling for anything converted out of it.

WAV comes from Microsoft / IBM and dates to 1991. It carries uncompressed audio (PCM), and without installing anything it plays on web browsers, Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android.

After converting your file, you can use Scriptivox transcription services to convert your audio to text. Perfect for meetings, interviews, podcasts, and more.

    OGV to WAV: common questions

Does converting OGV to WAV reduce audio quality?
The audio can only be as good as the track inside the video. Extracting does not add loss beyond the encoding step itself.
How much bigger or smaller will the WAV file be?
Much smaller. The video stream holds nearly all the data, so removing it typically cuts the file by an order of magnitude, down to about 21 MB per minute.
Where can I play WAV files?
Almost anywhere. WAV plays natively on web browsers, Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android, so you can share the file without asking anyone to install anything.
What happens to subtitles and extra tracks?
They are dropped. An audio file has nowhere to store subtitles or alternate video tracks, so only the soundtrack remains.
Do I need an account to convert OGV to WAV?
No. You can convert without an account, and a free account raises the size and length limits. Either way your file is used only to make the conversion, and the download link expires after one hour.
