MPEG-4 Part 14 is a container rather than a single codec, so what it holds depends on how the file was made. It can carry AAC-LC, HE-AAC, ALAC, which means two files with the same extension can differ in quality and size. Check the source before assuming which one you have.
If your source runs above 96 kHz, it will be resampled: M4A cannot store the 192 kHz that CAF allows.
