What changes when you convert AAC to WMA

    • Both AAC and WMA are lossy, so this conversion decodes AAC-LC and re-encodes it as WMA. That second encode adds its own loss on top of the first. Choosing a higher bitrate, up to 192 kbps, keeps the damage small enough to be inaudible in most material.

    • Be aware that you are narrowing playback: AAC plays natively on web browsers, macOS, iOS, Android, and smart TVs, where WMA does not. Convert this way when you need the format specifically, not for portability.

    • If your source runs above 48 kHz, it will be resampled: WMA cannot store the 96 kHz that AAC allows.

    • The two formats are aimed at different jobs. AAC is typically used for streaming services, mobile playback, broadcast, while WMA is the usual pick for Windows media libraries, legacy archives. That difference in intent is what most of the specification gaps above come from.

    • Expect metadata to be rewritten rather than copied: ID3v2 (limited in ADTS) in the source becomes ASF / WM tags in the result. Standard fields map cleanly; niche custom tags often do not.

    About AAC to WMA Conversion

This page converts AAC files, stored in the ADTS / raw AAC container since 1997, into WMA, which uses ASF and dates from 1999. The differences between the two containers decide what changes in the result.

AAC comes from MPEG / Fraunhofer IIS and dates to 1997. It holds lossy-compressed audio (AAC-LC or HE-AAC), and that sets the ceiling for anything converted out of it.

WMA comes from Microsoft and dates to 1999. It carries lossy-compressed audio (WMA or WMA Pro), and without installing anything it plays on Windows.

After converting your file, you can use Scriptivox transcription services to convert your audio to text. Perfect for meetings, interviews, podcasts, and more.

    AAC to WMA: common questions

Does converting AAC to WMA reduce audio quality?
Some detail is removed by design. Encoding near 192 kbps keeps that essentially inaudible, but the discarded data cannot be recovered from the result.
How much bigger or smaller will the WMA file be?
Roughly comparable. Both land in the same range, about 1.3 MB per minute for AAC and 1 MB per minute for WMA, so storage planning does not change much.
Where can I play WMA files?
Support is narrow. WMA plays natively only on Windows, so recipients may need a dedicated player. Choose it when the format itself is the requirement.
Will my track titles and artwork survive the conversion?
Standard fields do. AAC stores metadata as ID3v2 (limited in ADTS) and WMA uses ASF / WM tags, so titles, artists, album names and cover art are mapped across. Unusual custom fields sometimes have no equivalent and are dropped.
What bitrate should I choose for WMA?
Most material sits comfortably between 64 and 192 kbps. Use the lower end for speech and the upper end for music, or whenever the file may be edited or re-encoded later.
