Only the soundtrack survives: the video stream is dropped, and the AAC audio inside the M4V file is re-encoded as WMA.
The size drop is dramatic because the video stream is where nearly all the data lives. A minute of M4V runs around 90 MB; the extracted WMA is roughly 1 MB per minute.
Any subtitle tracks in the source are not part of an audio file and are dropped during extraction.
The source can carry more than one audio track, for example alternate languages or a commentary. Extraction takes the primary track.
This tool takes the audio track from inside a M4V file, a MPEG-4 (Apple variant) container from 2005, and saves it on its own as WMA. Everything visual is left behind.
M4V comes from Apple and dates to 2005. It carries H.264, which is what determines the quality ceiling of anything you convert out of it.
WMA was introduced by Microsoft in 1999. It carries WMA, WMA Pro and has native playback on 1 of six platform categories, which is the practical reason to choose it as a target.
