What changes when you convert M4V to WAV

    • This extracts the audio and discards the video entirely. The soundtrack inside a M4V file is typically AAC, and it is re-encoded to PCM on the way out.

    • Expect a much smaller file. Video accounts for most of the bytes, so about 90 MB per minute becomes roughly 21 MB per minute of WAV.

    • Choosing lossless WAV means nothing further is lost, though it cannot exceed the AAC track stored in the source video.

    • Subtitles do not survive audio extraction, since an audio container has nowhere to store them.

    • When a video holds several audio tracks, the main one is extracted; alternate language tracks are not merged into the result.

    About M4V to WAV Conversion

Extracting WAV audio from a M4V video pulls the soundtrack out of the MPEG-4 (Apple variant) container and writes it as a standalone RIFF WAVE file. The video stream, which holds most of the data, is discarded.

Developed by Apple in 2005, M4V carries H.264 video and AAC or AC-3 audio. That combination sets the upper bound on what any conversion can preserve.

WAV was introduced by Microsoft / IBM in 1991. It holds uncompressed audio (PCM) and plays natively on web browsers, Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android.

After converting your file, you can use Scriptivox transcription services to convert your audio to text. Perfect for meetings, interviews, podcasts, and more.

    M4V to WAV: common questions

Will I lose quality converting M4V to WAV?
Extraction itself does not degrade the audio beyond the re-encode. The ceiling is the soundtrack already stored in the video, so the result can match that track but not exceed it.
What file size should I expect from the WAV result?
Dramatically smaller, since only the soundtrack remains: expect around 21 MB per minute.
Is WAV widely supported on phones and browsers?
Support is effectively universal: WAV plays without extra software on web browsers, Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android.
Are subtitle tracks kept when converting to WAV?
Nothing but audio survives extraction, so subtitle and video tracks are removed.
Is this converter free, and what happens to my file?
Yes, it is free. Your file is uploaded to our servers only to make the conversion, it is never published or shared, and the download link expires after one hour.
