What changes when you convert TS to FLAC

    • This extracts the audio and discards the video entirely. The soundtrack inside a TS file is typically AAC, and it is re-encoded to FLAC on the way out.

    • Expect a much smaller file. Video accounts for most of the bytes, so about 113 MB per minute becomes roughly 6 MB per minute of FLAC.

    • Choosing lossless FLAC means nothing further is lost, though it cannot exceed the AAC track stored in the source video.

    • Subtitles do not survive audio extraction, since an audio container has nowhere to store them.

    • When a video holds several audio tracks, the main one is extracted; alternate language tracks are not merged into the result.

    About TS to FLAC Conversion

Extracting FLAC audio from a TS video pulls the soundtrack out of the MPEG-2 Transport Stream container and writes it as a standalone FLAC file. The video stream, which holds most of the data, is discarded.

Developed by MPEG in 1995, TS carries MPEG-2, H.264, or H.265 video and AAC, AC-3, or MP2 audio. That combination sets the upper bound on what any conversion can preserve.

FLAC was introduced by Xiph.Org Foundation in 2001. It holds losslessly compressed audio (FLAC) and plays natively on web browsers, Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android.

After converting your file, you can use Scriptivox transcription services to convert your audio to text. Perfect for meetings, interviews, podcasts, and more.

    TS to FLAC: common questions

Will I lose quality converting TS to FLAC?
Extraction itself does not degrade the audio beyond the re-encode. The ceiling is the soundtrack already stored in the video, so the result can match that track but not exceed it.
What file size should I expect from the FLAC result?
Dramatically smaller, since only the soundtrack remains: expect around 6 MB per minute.
Is FLAC widely supported on phones and browsers?
Support is effectively universal: FLAC plays without extra software on web browsers, Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android.
Are subtitle tracks kept when converting to FLAC?
Nothing but audio survives extraction, so subtitle and video tracks are removed.
Is this converter free, and what happens to my file?
Yes, it is free. Your file is uploaded to our servers only to make the conversion, it is never published or shared, and the download link expires after one hour.
