Only the soundtrack survives: the video stream is dropped, and the AC-3 audio inside the MTS file is re-encoded as PCM.
The size drop is dramatic because the video stream is where nearly all the data lives. A minute of MTS runs around 169 MB; the extracted AIFF is roughly 21 MB per minute.
AIFF is lossless, but the ceiling is the soundtrack already inside the video. That track is usually AC-3, which is lossy, so AIFF preserves it exactly rather than improving it.
The source can carry more than one audio track, for example alternate languages or a commentary. Extraction takes the primary track.
This tool takes the audio track from inside a MTS file, a AVCHD container from 2006, and saves it on its own as AIFF. Everything visual is left behind.
MTS comes from Sony / Panasonic and dates to 2006. It usually holds H.264 video with AC-3 or LPCM sound, and those streams set the ceiling for anything converted out of it.
AIFF comes from Apple and dates to 1988. It carries uncompressed audio (PCM), and without installing anything it plays on macOS and iOS.
