What changes when you convert MP4 to AIFF

    • This extracts the audio and discards the video entirely. The soundtrack inside a MP4 file is typically AAC, and it is re-encoded to PCM on the way out.

    • Expect a much smaller file. Video accounts for most of the bytes, so about 94 MB per minute becomes roughly 21 MB per minute of AIFF.

    • Choosing lossless AIFF means nothing further is lost, though it cannot exceed the AAC track stored in the source video.

    • Subtitles do not survive audio extraction, since an audio container has nowhere to store them.

    • When a video holds several audio tracks, the main one is extracted; alternate language tracks are not merged into the result.

    About MP4 to AIFF Conversion

Extracting AIFF audio from a MP4 video pulls the soundtrack out of the MPEG-4 Part 14 container and writes it as a standalone IFF / AIFF file. The video stream, which holds most of the data, is discarded.

Developed by MPEG in 2003, MP4 carries H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC, MP3, or ALAC audio. That combination sets the upper bound on what any conversion can preserve.

AIFF was introduced by Apple in 1988. It holds uncompressed audio (PCM) and plays natively on macOS and iOS.

After converting your file, you can use Scriptivox transcription services to convert your audio to text. Perfect for meetings, interviews, podcasts, and more.

    MP4 to AIFF: common questions

Will I lose quality converting MP4 to AIFF?
Extraction itself does not degrade the audio beyond the re-encode. The ceiling is the soundtrack already stored in the video, so the result can match that track but not exceed it.
What file size should I expect from the AIFF result?
Dramatically smaller, since only the soundtrack remains: expect around 21 MB per minute.
Is AIFF widely supported on phones and browsers?
Support is good but not universal: AIFF plays natively on macOS and iOS, and other systems need a media player.
Are subtitle tracks kept when converting to AIFF?
Nothing but audio survives extraction, so subtitle and video tracks are removed.
Is this converter free, and what happens to my file?
Yes, it is free. Your file is uploaded to our servers only to make the conversion, it is never published or shared, and the download link expires after one hour.
