Only the soundtrack survives: the video stream is dropped, and the MP2 audio inside the MPEG file is re-encoded as AAC-LC.
The size drop is dramatic because the video stream is where nearly all the data lives. A minute of MPEG runs around 41 MB; the extracted AAC is roughly 1.3 MB per minute.
The source can carry more than one audio track, for example alternate languages or a commentary. Extraction takes the primary track.
This tool takes the audio track from inside a MPEG file, a MPEG-1/2 Program Stream container from 1993, and saves it on its own as AAC. Everything visual is left behind.
MPEG comes from MPEG and dates to 1993. It usually holds MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video with MP2 or MP3 sound, and those streams set the ceiling for anything converted out of it.
AAC comes from MPEG / Fraunhofer IIS and dates to 1997. It carries lossy-compressed audio (AAC-LC or HE-AAC), and without installing anything it plays on web browsers, Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and smart TVs.
