Only the soundtrack survives: the video stream is dropped, and the AC-3 audio inside the MTS file is re-encoded as PCM.
The size drop is dramatic because the video stream is where nearly all the data lives. A minute of MTS runs around 169 MB; the extracted CAF is roughly 17 MB per minute.
The source can carry more than one audio track, for example alternate languages or a commentary. Extraction takes the primary track.
This tool takes the audio track from inside a MTS file, a AVCHD container from 2006, and saves it on its own as CAF. Everything visual is left behind.
MTS comes from Sony / Panasonic and dates to 2006. It usually holds H.264 video with AC-3 or LPCM sound, and those streams set the ceiling for anything converted out of it.
CAF comes from Apple and dates to 2005. It carries audio in whichever codec it was encoded with (PCM, ALAC, AAC, or Opus), and without installing anything it plays on macOS and iOS.
