Only the soundtrack survives: the video stream is dropped, and the AAC audio inside the FLV file is re-encoded as PCM.
The size drop is dramatic because the video stream is where nearly all the data lives. A minute of FLV runs around 34 MB; the extracted CAF is roughly 17 MB per minute.
This tool takes the audio track from inside a FLV file, a Flash Video container from 2002, and saves it on its own as CAF. Everything visual is left behind.
FLV comes from Adobe (Macromedia) and dates to 2002. It carries H.264, Sorenson Spark, VP6, which is what determines the quality ceiling of anything you convert out of it.
CAF was introduced by Apple in 2005. It carries PCM, ALAC, AAC, Opus and has native playback on 2 of six platform categories, which is the practical reason to choose it as a target.
