Only the soundtrack survives: the video stream is dropped, and the MP3 audio inside the AVI file is re-encoded as FLAC.
The size drop is dramatic because the video stream is where nearly all the data lives. A minute of AVI runs around 53 MB; the extracted FLAC is roughly 6 MB per minute.
FLAC is lossless, but the ceiling is the soundtrack already inside the video. That track is usually MP3, which is lossy, so FLAC preserves it exactly rather than improving it.
The source can carry more than one audio track, for example alternate languages or a commentary. Extraction takes the primary track.
This tool takes the audio track from inside a AVI file, a RIFF AVI container from 1992, and saves it on its own as FLAC. Everything visual is left behind.
AVI comes from Microsoft and dates to 1992. It carries MPEG-4 Part 2, DivX, Xvid, which is what determines the quality ceiling of anything you convert out of it.
FLAC was introduced by Xiph.Org Foundation in 2001. It carries FLAC and has native playback on 5 of six platform categories, which is the practical reason to choose it as a target.
