Only the soundtrack survives: the video stream is dropped, and the AAC audio inside the TS file is re-encoded as AAC-LC.
The size drop is dramatic because the video stream is where nearly all the data lives. A minute of TS runs around 113 MB; the extracted AAC is roughly 1.3 MB per minute.
Any subtitle tracks in the source are not part of an audio file and are dropped during extraction.
The source can carry more than one audio track, for example alternate languages or a commentary. Extraction takes the primary track.
This tool takes the audio track from inside a TS file, a MPEG-2 Transport Stream container from 1995, and saves it on its own as AAC. Everything visual is left behind.
TS comes from MPEG and dates to 1995. It carries MPEG-2, H.264, H.265, which is what determines the quality ceiling of anything you convert out of it.
AAC was introduced by MPEG / Fraunhofer IIS in 1997. It carries AAC-LC, HE-AAC and has native playback on 6 of six platform categories, which is the practical reason to choose it as a target.
